Implant Training Internship
Participants in this unique hands-on teaching internship will learn dental implant placement techniques on patients and placement guidelines will be put into actual practice. Tutors will also help in treatment planning and provide support and guidance in the assembly of your personal case learning portfolio.
This course is ideal if you have already attended a number of teaching programmes but have received no clinical training or are unable to obtain patients in order to develop your clinical competencies in Implant Dentistry.
Your training with us will also count towards the MClinDent in Implant Dentistry and you will receive a discount off our Post Graduate Award (PGA) in Implant Dentistry. The (PGA) in Implant Dentistry is an excellent adjunct providing the academic component to your training.

Mentored implant training on actual patients
Although a number of programmes offer the opportunity to place implants and deliver surgical training they do not  adequately cover the patient selection, consultation, consent, record taking, treatment planning and restoration expected by the GDC. Even more importantly how to identify and manage complications that can arise after implant placement are not  addressed by such short programmes.
A new approach to mentored clinical training has been developed at The City of London Dental School that permits the dentist to follow the implant case from treatment planning through to surgical placement and final restoration. A short single programme offering only limited exposure to the surgical phase of implant treatment is insufficient to acquire all the competencies dentists need for implant treatment and be able to satisfy GDC training guide lines.

Clinical Practice of Implant Dentistry
A unique feature of this clinical training programme is that consented patients are provided presenting a number of implant scenarios that expose the treating dentist to a variety of management and restorative challenges. The programme has two parts:
Lvel 1. Foundation In the Clinical Practice of Implant Dentistry.
This course introduces the clinical principles of implantology and dentists get the opportunity to place implants on actual patients selected for their simplicity. These cases have predictable outcomes and do not present anatomical or restorative challenges beyond the dentist’s competency. In total five straightforward cases are provided that help the dentist to develop their surgical and restorative implant skills and competency. These cases normally entail placing up to two implants under direct supervision in regions of good bone volume or requiring only minimal bone grafting using synthetic materials. Dentists also get the chance to insert at least one immediate implant in the anterior region of the mouth. On completion of the foundation programme dentists may decide to defer progress to Part 11 and confidently treat further straightforward cases independently in their own practices.
Level 2. Advanced Clinical Practice of Implant Dentistry.
The advanced programme of supervision introduces autogenous bone grafting and closed sinus lifting. It covers the rehabilitation and reconstruction of resorbed jaws where loss of alveolar bone height and buccolabial bone width which with the reduction in bone density or anatomy makes implant placement more challenging and so requiring the acquisition of  advanced clinical competencies. Five cases classified as advanced are provided. These cases are restoratively less predictable and extend the dentist’s skills and knowledge safely and ethically whilst building a portfolio of a range of cases.
On completion participants in the clinical programme will have:
Received supervised clinical training together with patients to permit the development and assessment of your competency.
Receive one to one hands-on support and learn implant placement protocols.
A statement of competency appraisal of your skills signed off by a suitably trained mentor.
A personal portfolio of evidence which can be used to support your clinical activity and validate competency
A thorough understanding of the principles of implant supported restorative dentistry before independently placing implants.
Practised clinical assessment, treatment planning and the placement of implants in the presence of an experienced implant clinician.
Cases treated on this supervised programmes can be submitted for assessment on a number of Diploma and MClinDent programmes.

Who Should Attend?
Any dentist who wants to give their patients the best choices
If you seriously intend to start placing implants
If you wish to progress your practice and professional skills in accordance with GDC guidelines

Clinical Training Facilities and Support
Clinical training is delivered in a state of the art clinical facility  dedicated to the provision of implant treatment offering a fully equipped implant suite. The supporting dental team are trained in implant dentistry allowing the dentist to concentrate on the implant dentistry learning experience  without having to be concerned about clinical support and administration. The support team has ten years experience in training dentists in implant dentistry and can advise on equipment set up, maintenance and sterilisation. An onsite CBCT is essential for the planning of advanced cases and computerised scanners mean dentists can virtually design their implant prosthetics. They are also given the opportunity to operate a CT scan and taught how to evaluate and report on the results.
Multi-System Applicable
The clinical training provided is non-system biased meaning protocols and not system dogma are learnt. During training you will use a generic system representing many of the common desirable features of modern day systems. On completion of training you will be able to make an informed choice about the implant system that best suits your treatment needs and operating style.
Attendance Options
The clinic training you will receive which takes place at our regional centre in London approximately four days a month. You can choose to attend all four days a month  or just one day a month as fits your requirements.
During  your time as an intern at Sterling Dental College our collaborative partner you will be shown how to assemble your own on line web log which provides evidence of mentored training. On completing your time with us you may continue to use the system to audit your own cases from practice, as required by the GDC, at no addition cost.
Course Fee Options
Levels 1 and 2 each cost £5,000 and includes all surgical materials, implant and restorative components together with a consented patient. For level 2 mentoring you may choose to refer your own implant case in which case their treatment fee will cover your tuition fee and you pay nothing for your training.
During your internship with us you will treat a case from consultation and assessment through to completion, it is not sufficient to just be able to place implants you also have to be able to show competency in planning and restoration of implant cases.
Course Dates
The course dates are open and training may be commenced at any point during the year. The dates available on application.
